While alluding to Hansraj Model School Punjabi Bagh, one is bound to pay an ode to the founding fathers of this venerated institution. In an era, when India was entrenched in superstitions, social evils, illiteracy, and the burden of colonial oppression, a visionary ascended to illuminate the path forward. Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati or fondly revered as ‘Swami Dayanand’, emerged as a reformer and patriot, devoted to awakening the nation with the timeless wisdom of the Vedas. Inspired by his Guru, Swami Virjanand, Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, took a solemn pledge to spread this light across the country, transforming lives and communities.
Through his pioneering book, Satyarth Prakash, he laid the intellectual foundation for India’s independence by advocating Swaraj and Swadeshi. His vision extended beyond freedom—it encompassed a future built on a progressive knowledge, unison in the diversity of religious beliefs, values and self-reliance. He founded the Arya Samaj, and under his tutelage, several educational institutions came into existence.
After his passing on October 30, 1883, his disciples sought a fitting way to honour his patrimony. They envisioned an educational institution as a living tribute, one that would perpetuate his mission of enlightenment and empowerment for generations to come. A school was established by his disciple Mahatma Hansraj, who wanted to spread the message of his guru to the world. The first school was inaugurated in 1886 where Swami Hansraj became the headmaster.
